How To Write A Resume That Gets The Job

How to write a resume that gets results is a challenge. It can be hard to know whether you are getting all the elements right, since your only feedback is a call to come to an interview.. You can"t always tell by the number of calls you get from employers, because whether or not you are a good "fit" is as important as the content of your resume. But there are things you can do when deciding how to write a resume stand out, and how you can highlight your personal work history in the best possible light.

Job-Hunting? Do's And Don't's

DON"T

1.    Don"t spend any time researching the organization in advance.

Your lack of knowledge will be a good indication of your lack of initiation, lack of curiosity, lack of go-get-;em-ness.

2.     Don"t have anyone videotape you doing an interview-rehearsal.

If you don"t have the video, you won"t be able to assess your confidence, poise, enthusiasm, verbal fluidity. Without the assessment, you have the perfect reason not to improve.

3.    Don"t bother reading about difficult interview situations. This way, you won"t have to imagine what you would have done in place of those being interviewed. Without the knowledge of really difficult situations, you won"t be able to make your own situation seem comfortable by comparison. But then, you probably have no need to calm your nerves.

4.     Don"t create one really intriguing statement about yourself. After all, you have no need or desire to anticipate the questions you"re likely to be asked. You are a far cry from a woman I know, who expected to be told, "Tell us a bit about yourself" (THE most popular interview question). She replied, "I think I should tell you I"m a non-conforming conformist." She explained what she meant and wound up getting the job! (Don"t worry. It won"t happen to you if you just follow these recommendations.)

5.    Don"t watch people being interviewed on t.v. Be sure you don"t make note of what works. You no doubt like winging it. And, it"s very likely your wings will be clipped as you try to fly toward a successful job interview.

Of course, there are steps you can take to ensure you"ll land the job of your dreams. Here are five positive actions you can take.

DO

6.    Memorize a few short quotes and have them ready. They"ll help you respond articulately to virtually any question.

7.    Tape record your reply to expected questions. Play the tape back and analyze your responses. Would You hire You?

8.    Have an elevator speech ready in case they want a brief overview of your career.

9.    Think about some visual that really represents what you can do. It can be a photo taken at an event you organized, for example. If you have nothing that symbolizes your capabilities, then look for a pattern not readily apparent in

your resume and be prepared to talk about that particular interest or talent, apart from your official work history.

10.  When you get to the interview site and are waiting to be called in to the interview room, work on a brainteaser. Research shows it calms the nerves and takes your mind off the challenge ahead.
